Former Jeffco Schools Chief Found Dead Amid Ongoing Investigation
WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD. — David Weiss, the former chief of schools for Jeffco Public Schools, was discovered dead in Maryland on Wednesday morning. His death comes amidst an active investigation concerning allegations of possessing child sexual abuse materials, which prompted his termination in December.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) confirmed they were conducting an "open criminal investigation" involving Weiss but refrained from disclosing further details regarding the nature of the investigation at that time. Weiss, who assumed the chief position in February 2022, previously served as a principal and community superintendent within the district.
On Wednesday, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office reached out to the JCSO regarding Weiss’ death, which occurred while he was visiting family for the holidays. According to Lt. David Haugh, investigators believe Weiss may have taken his own life, and no signs of foul play have been identified as of Thursday morning.
Following the confirmation of Weiss’ death, the JCSO reiterated that their investigation into the allegations against him would continue, although no additional information was available at the moment.
The tragic turn of events surrounding Weiss serves as a stark reminder of the serious legal and moral implications surrounding such allegations, leaving the community and the educational sector in a state of shock and reflection.
More updates may emerge as investigations progress, ensuring a focus on accountability within the educational system.
