Jimmy Carter, 39th U.S. President, Dies at 100

Plains, Georgia – Former President Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, passed away on Sunday at the age of 100, as announced by the Carter Center. He "died peacefully" at his home with family members by his side. His son, Chip Carter, hailed him as a "hero" and celebrated his commitment to peace and human rights.

Although Carter served only one term from 1977 to 1981, he later became one of the longest-lived ex-presidents and a distinguished humanitarian, receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his lifelong dedication to peace, democracy, and human rights. President Biden paid tribute to Carter, calling him a "man of character, courage, and compassion" and declaring January 9 a national day of mourning.

Carter’s presidency was marked by significant challenges, including the energy crisis and the Iran hostage situation. He achieved notable successes like the Camp David Accords, which secured peace between Israel and Egypt, and established the departments of Energy and Education. However, his outsider status made governance difficult, leading to political friction and a decline in popularity.

Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Carter spent years serving in the Navy before entering Georgia state politics, ultimately becoming governor. Together with his wife, Rosalynn, he founded The Carter Center and dedicated over 30 years to Habitat for Humanity. His commitment to education and health initiatives resonated widely, as did his thought-provoking publications, including a controversial critique of Israel’s policies towards Palestinians.

Carter’s legacy as a humanitarian and statesman will endure, inspiring future leaders to prioritize service above politics. He is survived by his four children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
