Highway 93 Closed After Semi Crash Amid High Winds in Jefferson County
Jefferson County, Colo. – A significant stretch of Highway 93, located between Golden and Boulder, has been closed in both directions following a semi-truck crash. This closure, prompted by the incident and safety concerns related to high winds, stretches from Indian Head Road to Highway 128 (W. 120th Avenue), according to officials from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Colorado State Patrol (CSP).
Around noon, CDOT reported average wind speeds of 34 mph, with gusts reaching as high as 51 mph. Jacki Kelley, a spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, noted that hazardous conditions were exacerbated by blowing debris. CSP confirmed that a semi-truck overturned around 11 a.m. near the crossroads of Highway 93 and Highway 72. Fortunately, the driver was unharmed, and the truck has since been moved off the roadway.
As of 1:20 p.m., the road remains closed while officials divert local traffic. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes and can obtain real-time information about road conditions and closures at CoTrip.org.
In addition to the road incident, the Front Range, foothills, and southeastern plains are under a Red Flag Warning due to critical fire weather conditions. Peak wind gusts in Denver are expected to reach 40 to 45 mph, with Boulder experiencing gusts between 50 to 55 mph. The National Weather Service in Boulder has issued a warning about "hazardous travel" from crosswinds and blowing dust throughout the day.
