Pakistan in 2024: Strained Relations with Neighbors, Economic Challenges, and the Khan Dilemma | Global News

In 2024, Islamabad, Pakistan, faced a myriad of issues including political instability, economic hardships, security concerns, and strained relations with neighbors. However, the year was predominantly defined by the country’s struggle to address the presence of incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Despite efforts to stabilize the economy and improve relations with countries like India, Pakistan continued to grapple with internal and external challenges.

As Pakistan hosted a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation conclave, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar attended, marking the first high-ranking Indian minister to visit Islamabad in nearly a decade. Jaishankar’s remarks at the event were seen as a message to Pakistan, urging introspection and addressing issues that hinder good neighborly relations.

Throughout the year, Pakistan saw a series of terror attacks, with hundreds of casualties reported, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces. The country also carried out airstrikes in Afghanistan, escalating tensions in the region.

On the economic front, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif was praised for averting a financial crisis and implementing reforms that led to a decrease in inflation and improvement in foreign exchange reserves. However, it was Imran Khan’s presence in the political landscape that continued to dominate headlines, as his popularity grew despite being in jail for corruption charges.

As political negotiations between parties and the government continue, the country faces uncertainty in the coming year. Khan’s demands to restore his perceived stolen mandate could lead to further political instability in 2025. With longstanding challenges persisting, Pakistan must address the presence of a ‘cornered tiger’ to navigate through the turbulent political climate.
