Boulder Police and John Ramsey Hope New DNA Technology Can Solve JonBenét Case
BOULDER, Colo. — Nearly 28 years after the tragic death of JonBenét Ramsey, her father, John Ramsey, is seeking renewed efforts in the investigation through advancements in DNA technology. John has announced plans to meet with Boulder Police Chief Maris Herold to discuss innovative forensic methods that could lead to resolving the case.
JonBenét, who was just six years old when she was found dead in her Boulder home on December 26, 1996, has had her case remain shrouded in mystery despite years of investigation and public interest. The Boulder Police Department has faced criticism for its handling of the initial inquiry, and recent attention from a Netflix docu-series has reignited calls for justice.
In 2008, DNA evidence identified an unidentified male genetic profile, clearing JonBenét’s family of involvement. However, many believe key evidence remains untested. "The garrote, a suitcase found under the window… I think it can be solved if we take advantage of the latest technology," John emphasized, advocating for genetic genealogy, a method that gained traction after the Golden State Killer case was cracked in 2018.
CeCe Moore, a genetic genealogist, expressed confidence in the potential of reanalyzing available DNA evidence to identify the perpetrator. Despite Boulder PD’s assertion refuting claims of undisputed evidence, John remains optimistic about Chief Herold’s recent leadership approach. He believes that with collaboration from the FBI and newly applied methods, identifying JonBenét’s killer is plausible within the coming years.
John Ramsey noted that efforts will not cease until all avenues for justice have been explored, stating, “If they do [the testing] and we come up empty-handed, I’m going to say thank you for trying.” A meeting between John and Boulder PD is anticipated in 2025, as the family continues their pursuit for answers in the heart-wrenching case.
