Stormy Weather Ahead for Colorado: High Winds and Fire Warnings

DENVER — Colorado residents can expect a mild Sunday, but a significant weather shift is on the horizon. While much of the state enjoys unseasonably warm temperatures with highs in the 50s and 60s, the mountains will prepare for snow beginning tonight. However, this calm will soon give way to strong winds and fire weather warnings starting Monday.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a High Wind Watch across the region, anticipating sustained northwest winds between 30-45 mph, with gusts possibly exceeding 60 mph. This wind event could lead to delays at Denver International Airport and create hazardous travel conditions due to blowing dust, particularly east of I-25. The NWS warns that a Blowing Dust Advisory, or even a Dust Storm Warning, could be issued in response to these events.

Adding to the complexity of the situation, ongoing drought conditions heighten the fire risk in the foothills, Metro Denver, and the plains. The combination of high winds and dry vegetation has prompted a Red Flag Warning, signaling extreme fire weather concerns. This is particularly sobering as Monday marks the anniversary of the devastating Marshall Fire.

As winter weather returns to the mountains, a third round of snow is expected tonight into Monday, mainly affecting areas along and north of Interstate 70. Avalanche risks will rise in mountainous regions, particularly around Steamboat Springs.

Looking ahead, the forecast includes cooler temperatures early in the week, with highs dipping to around 45 on Monday, and a more seasonal trend towards the New Year. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the changing weather conditions, take safety precautions, and remain vigilant regarding fire risks.
