A New Year in Aurora: Reflecting on 2024 and Anticipating 2025

Aurora Looks Ahead to 2025 with New Initiatives Amidst Challenges

Aurora, CO – As the city navigates a challenging year marked by police leadership turnover and rising crime concerns, city officials express optimism for 2025. In response to pressing issues, including gang violence and homelessness, Aurora’s leadership has implemented new policies aimed at fostering community safety and well-being.

Elected officials reinforced car registration and insurance laws, lifted the longstanding ban on pit bull ownership following a public vote, and banned homeless encampments along the I-225 corridor. A highlight for 2025 will be the opening of the Aurora Regional Navigation Campus, designed to centralize homeless services and provide supportive living conditions.

The Aurora Police Department faced significant leadership changes, with three police chiefs in one year. Interim Chief Art Acevedo’s departure in January led to Heather Morris and, ultimately, Todd Chamberlain assuming the role. Aurora’s officials have also been addressing gun violence linked to a volatile gang from Venezuela, which garnered national attention and criticism, including remarks from Donald Trump during his campaign visit.

In local governance, the city welcomed new council member Amsalu Kassaw, following the resignation of Mayor pro tem Dustin Zvonek. Aurora City Council remains committed to addressing domestic violence by shifting cases from municipal to county courts beginning July 2025.

Looking ahead, Aurora plans to finalize its multimodal transportation master plan, aiming for accessible transit solutions, and has recently repealed the longstanding occupational privilege tax to support local businesses. With these initiatives and a focus on collaboration, Aurora city leaders are confident about the community’s future as they work towards improved safety and quality of life in the coming year.
