The Attorney General’s Office released body camera footage from an incident at Marcy Correctional Facility where an incarcerated Greece man, Robert Brooks, died in December after an encounter with correction officers. The videos showed Brooks being repeatedly punched, hit, and stripped of his clothing by multiple officers. Governor Kathy Hochul called for the firing of 14 individuals involved in the incident. The footage was described as horrific by officials and led to calls for accountability and justice for Brooks’ family. The New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association condemned the actions of the officers involved as not reflective of their membership overall. The New York State Sheriff’s Association expressed shock and disapproval at the extreme cruelty displayed in the video. An investigation by the New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation was opened. Senator Jeremy Cooney and Rochester Mayor Malik Evans also condemned the violence. Members of the public can view the footage to understand the nature of the attack on Brooks. Brooks had been serving a 12-year sentence after stabbing his girlfriend, and his family is seeking justice for his memory and safety for other prisoners. The incident highlights the need for accountability and reform within the correctional system to prevent future instances of violence and abuse.
