Funeral service held for 14-year-old victim of tragic shooting incident at Madison Christian school

Rubi Patricia Vergara, a 14-year-old freshman at Abundant Life Christian School, was laid to rest after being shot and killed in a tragic school shooting in Madison. The perpetrator, 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow, also lost her life in the incident. Vergara’s family expressed forgiveness towards Rupnow, acknowledging that both families have suffered a great loss. The funeral, held at City Church, was attended by over 100 people and streamed on Facebook Live.

During the service, Vergara was remembered as an introverted, compassionate individual who loved music, art, animals, and books. Friends shared memories of her talent for music, creating artwork, and her empathy towards others. One of her best friend’s mothers described her as a “gift” that will always be cherished.

Another victim of the shooting was Erin M. West, a substitute teacher coordinator at the school, whose memorial service will be held at a church in Fitchburg. The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that both Vergara and West died from firearm-related trauma. The police are unsure of Rupnow’s motive and do not believe she targeted anyone specifically.

Six other students were injured in the shooting, two of whom sustained life-threatening injuries. Rupnow took her own life with her own gun following the incident. The community is grieving the loss of two lives and praying for the recovery of the injured students.
