Madison residents gathered at vigils across the city to mourn and process Monday’s deadly shooting at Abundant Life Christian School, which killed a student and a teacher. At the state Capitol, hundreds gathered for a vigil organized by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dane County. Charles Moore of Impact Christian Schools expressed shock at the tragedy and asked for continued prayers for the injured. Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway urged the community to support each other. U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin and U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan sent condolences and called for action against gun violence.
Emotional support dogs were present to comfort those overwhelmed by the events. City Church held a private prayer gathering next to the school, while local politicians offered condolences and called for action on gun violence. Candles and flowers were left outside the school, and Blackhawk Church in Middleton hosted a prayer service for those affected. The church, which has ties to Abundant Life, plans to hold a “Blue Christmas” service for those experiencing grief during the holiday season.
In the face of tragedy, the Madison community came together to mourn, provide support, and seek comfort and healing during a difficult time. Vigils, prayers, and expressions of solidarity demonstrated a shared commitment to caring for those affected by the violence and to working towards a safer and more supportive community.
