300 Flock Cameras to Be Installed in Colorado Mountain County

Summit County Enhances Crime Prevention with New Surveillance Camera Initiative

Summit County is taking a proactive stance in crime prevention by collaborating with several Colorado communities to install specialized surveillance cameras aimed at enhancing safety along major roadways, including Interstate 70 and Highway 9. Unlike typical traffic cameras, these devices are specifically designed to monitor entrances and exits to combat serious criminal activities.

The Flock Safety cameras serve as advanced license plate readers, capable of identifying vehicle makes, models, and colors. When law enforcement agencies receive details about a suspect’s vehicle, they can track its movement through the network of cameras, allowing officers to intercept quickly. Summit County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Mike Schilling emphasized the importance of the technology in addressing serious threats, stating, "It gives us eyes where we don’t always have them… specifically to prevent human trafficking, combat drug trafficking, and locate kidnapping victims."

The initiative has received a significant funding boost from Congressman Joe Neguse, who successfully secured $210,000 for the camera program. While the cameras will also be placed within city interiors, the primary focus is on monitoring criminal activity along key highways. As Summit County joins this initiative, it will integrate into a broader network of law enforcement agencies sharing data across jurisdictions, extending beyond state lines.

Flock Safety has already established a presence in the Denver metro area, where law enforcement is increasingly adopting this cutting-edge technology. The first cameras in Summit County are slated for installation by January 1, with plans for additional units rolling out throughout 2025. Schilling notes that the network fosters collaboration among law enforcement agencies, enhancing the overall safety of the I-70 corridor.
