Emmanuel Macron to visit Mayotte in the aftermath of Cyclone Chido in the near future

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced that he will be visiting Mayotte in the coming days following the devastation caused by Cyclone Chido. The cyclone has wreaked havoc on the French overseas territory, leaving hundreds feared dead.

After an emergency meeting at the French Interior Ministry’s crisis centre, Macron stated that all emergency measures will be put in place to assist the residents of Mayotte and ensure the continuity of state functions. He also emphasized the need to prepare for the future in the wake of this tragedy and announced plans to declare a national mourning.

The death toll from the cyclone is expected to be significant, with more than a thousand civilians reported missing and hundreds feared dead. French military aircraft have been deployed to provide aid and assist in search and rescue efforts. However, logistical difficulties, including damage to the only airport’s control tower, have hindered response and relief efforts.

Mayotte, the poorest department of France and considered the poorest territory in the European Union, has been left devastated by the cyclone. The densely populated island of approximately 300,000 people has suffered extensive damage to buildings, infrastructure, and telecommunications.

In response to the crisis, 800 rescuers are expected to arrive on the island in the coming days, along with 1,600 police and gendarmerie officers to maintain order and prevent looting and crime. Macron’s visit aims to provide support and solidarity to the people of Mayotte during this difficult time.
