Peak Design executive denies sharing customer information with CEO shooter

The CEO of Peak Design, a company that makes high-end backpacks, faced criticism after contacting the police about a suspect in the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson who was seen wearing one of their backpacks in surveillance images. The suspect, Luigi Mangione, has been arrested and charged in the killing, leading to outrage and backlash against the company on social media. Peak Design clarified their privacy policy, stating they have not provided customer information to the police and would only do so under a subpoena. CEO Peter Dering said he contacted the NYPD after multiple people alerted him about the backpack worn by the suspect, and if further information is needed, he would consult with the company’s general counsel to ensure they comply with privacy guidelines. The company’s statement emphasized that customer information is not shared unless voluntarily registered, and registrations can be erased if a product is lost or stolen. The backlash on social media labeled the CEO as a “snitch” and raised concerns about how shopping data could be used in the future. Dering and Peak Design employees have also faced threats in the aftermath of the shooting. The company maintains that they value customer privacy and will only share information in response to legal orders.
