Aurora Police Arrest Suspect in Year-Long Sextortion Investigation

The Aurora Police Department’s Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Unit has arrested Jamir Deante Bright, a resident of Aurora, as part of an extensive year-long investigation into sextortion targeting local students. Bright was taken into custody on December 5 on an active felony warrant, facing charges including two counts of child exploitation and one count of criminal extortion.

The investigation was launched in January after numerous reports of sextortion incidents involving students at various local schools reached the Aurora Police’s school resource officers. Sextortion is a crime where minors are blackmailed, often through threats to publish explicit images, or coerced into sharing such images in exchange for money. Investigators revealed that several victims were subjected to both forms of exploitation.

Sgt. Joseph Sullivan of the Aurora ICAC Unit emphasized the need for parental vigilance, stating, "Be aware that there are people out there who consider this their job. They look for easy victims." The investigation involved collaboration among various law enforcement entities, including the Department of Homeland Security and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

In addition to Bright, two teenage accomplices—aged 14 and 17, both from Denver—were identified. They face charges in Aurora Municipal Court, while Bright’s case will be prosecuted in Arapahoe District Court. Bright was subsequently released on a $10,000 bond.

The investigation remains active, with authorities urging anyone with pertinent information to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720.913.STOP (7867), where tipsters can remain anonymous and may qualify for rewards up to $2,000.
