Community Unites to Brighten Holidays for Seniors in Douglas County
CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — This holiday season, the Aging Resources of Douglas County nonprofit is rallying community support to bring joy to lonely or financially challenged seniors. At their office, a Christmas tree adorned with bulbs reveals the names of seniors along with specific gift suggestions, including clothing sizes and preferences. “Many of these older adults are living alone or feeling isolated. Community gifts can significantly brighten their Christmas,” stated Kelsey Thiessen, director of operations.
In collaboration with Home Instead Castle Rock, Aging Resources has launched the "Be a Santa to a Senior" initiative, which aims to provide holiday gifts to 135 deserving seniors this year—marking a significant increase in their outreach compared to previous years. Thiessen expressed gratitude to Home Instead for their partnership, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in making a positive impact during the holidays.
Volunteer Katheryn Wille shared her passion for supporting seniors, noting the unique joy derived from seeing their smiles. Wille recently had the chance to personally deliver gifts, which deepened her connection with the senior recipient. “Meeting the individual behind the name made the experience even more rewarding. We found common ground and shared moments that truly meant a lot,” she reflected.
The nonprofit invites community members to participate and support this cause before December 16. Individuals can select a bulb from designated locations, including Independent Financial and Community Banks of Colorado, to contribute to spreading holiday cheer among local seniors. Each gift represents more than just an item; it embodies a connection and community spirit that can profoundly impact someone’s holiday season.
