Colorado state Senator Sonya Jaquez Lewis, a Democrat from Longmont, is facing demands for her resignation from the Political Workers Guild (PWG), an association of legislative aides at the Capitol. The Guild alleges that Jaquez Lewis mistreated her aides and failed to show respect or decency towards them. The group is calling for her resignation, threatening to convene an ethics committee if necessary.
In a stern email, outgoing Senate President Steve Fenberg expressed concerns about the senator’s treatment of her aides, dating back to 2023. Jaquez Lewis was previously removed from a bill and stripped of her leadership position as a consequence of her behavior. Recent workplace misconduct complaints have alleged that she paid a Hispanic male aide for landscaping and other non-legislative work, violating campaign finance laws.
The political turmoil surrounding Jaquez Lewis has caused a rift within the Senate Democrats, with the PWG calling on legislative leaders to create a formal body to address grievances by aides. Despite these allegations and demands, Jaquez Lewis has not yet issued a response.
As a member of the Senate Democratic caucus, Jaquez Lewis is known for sponsoring progressive legislation on gun restrictions and oil and gas drilling. With the pressure mounting for her resignation, the future of her political career remains uncertain.
