Hope Has No Borders, a female-run organization in the greater Denver area, has partnered with Mile High United Way to connect migrants to housing opportunities. The initiative comes as Denver has reduced funding for migrants despite the city accommodating 41,530 newcomers at a cost of $70 million.
The partnership involves a 211 hotline to connect potential housing hosts with migrants in need. Hope Has No Borders facilitates the matching process while Mile High United Way handles the calls. The program, run independently by Hope Has No Borders, aims to address socio-economic disparities by providing transitional housing for various individuals in need.
With the goal of recruiting 50 host families, the program has already had its first success story with Erin Lennon hosting a Chilean family of four. Hosts are encouraged to provide temporary or long-term housing solutions based on their preferences. The 211 Help Center operated by Mile High United Way assists individuals in accessing critical resources including food, shelter, rental assistance, childcare, and more.
Hope’s executive directors see the program as a solution to alleviate homelessness among migrants in the state. By offering transitional housing, they hope to support migrants in need and make a positive impact on the ongoing humanitarian crisis. The program has also addressed challenges faced by migrants in obtaining work permits by creating LLCs for income generation.
