Denver’s ArtistiCO Dance Company Presents Unique Holiday Performance: Fiestas Navideñas
DENVER — This holiday season, the ArtistiCO Dance Company is set to delight audiences with a fusion of Mexican heritage and Christmas traditions in its unique performance, Fiestas Navideñas. Co-founded by José Rosales and Alfonso Meraza, the show aims to highlight the cultural significance of the holidays, offering a fresh take on the classic Nutcracker.
“Fiestas Navideñas adds a Mexican-inspired twist to traditional Christmas celebrations,” Rosales explains, emphasizing the central themes of family, culture, and love. The performance will incorporate various Mexican traditions, including pastorelas, las posadas, and the celebration of Los Reyes Magos, the Three Kings who bring gifts to children on January 6.
The Three Kings serve as narrators throughout the performance, transporting the audience across different regions of Mexico. Colorful stage elements, such as a giant piñata and poinsettia decorations, enhance the festive atmosphere, creating an immersive experience.
Rosales, who immigrated to Colorado from Mexico as a child, recalls his struggle to assimilate and the importance of embracing his roots. Through ArtistiCO, he aims to nurture the next generation’s connection to their heritage. “The songs and dances bring back memories of my grandmother,” he shares, illustrating how the performance rekindles familial traditions.
Aside from celebrating heritage, the company strives to introduce dancers to Mexican folklore styles. “ArtistiCO was born to establish a pipeline to professional Mexican dance in the U.S.,” Rosales states, underlining the need for representation in American dance studios.
