Press Release: Denver Kids Embrace Healthy Cooking with a Green Twist
DENVER — This week, Denver’s elementary students are not just learning about healthy cuisine—they’re discovering the importance of environmentally-friendly cooking. The second annual chef showdown, hosted by the non-profit organization Girls Inc. along with the City of Denver’s Office of Climate Action, encourages kids as young as six to unleash their culinary creativity while prioritizing eco-friendly practices.
During this competition, students are challenged to create delicious dishes using a secret ingredient, all while utilizing electric appliances. Last year’s event featured older participants, but this inclusive approach fosters work-life skills as each child teams up with an adult mentor.
Amariah Jean-Baptiste, one of the event’s organizers, emphasized the importance of blending fun with education, stating, "It’s a way for them to learn about food science in an engaging manner. They also learn valuable teamwork skills."
Chef Andrew Forlines, the city’s cooking electrification administrator, highlights the advantages of induction cooktops—efficient, carbon-free appliances that enhance indoor air quality while providing superior temperature control. “We can achieve more heat with induction than with gas, showcasing its precise and consistent heating capability,” Forlines remarked. Despite being a well-established technology globally, electric cooking is still gaining momentum in the U.S.
The event also serves as a platform to gather community feedback regarding incentives and rebates for greener cooking appliances, paving the way for increased adoption of sustainable cooking practices in households.
Jean-Baptiste hopes that such initiatives will inspire children to embrace sustainable living choices, both in their homes and beyond. As Denver’s young chefs showcase their culinary talents, they are simultaneously championing a healthier planet.
For those interested, feedback on the Building Electrification Rebates can be submitted through the city’s official channels.
