He was expected to be sentenced for both convictions before the pardon. Hunter Biden issued a statement expressing remorse for his mistakes and vowed to help others struggling with addiction. President Biden had previously stated that he would not pardon his son, but changed his mind after believing that Hunter was unfairly targeted due to being his son. Biden pointed to a failed plea deal in 2023 as evidence of selective prosecution. The president emphasized that he believes Hunter was singled out because of their familial relationship and stated that enough was enough in terms of the attacks on his son.
