Access to High Line Canal Trail Path Blocked by Private Property Sign
LITTLETON, Colo. — A popular route for walkers, cyclists, and dog owners has recently been disrupted. Users of the High Line Canal Trail were surprised to encounter a new sign declaring a once-frequented access path to Jackass Hill Park as "PRIVATE PROPERTY," warning that violators would be prosecuted. This closure has sparked concern among local residents who relied on the path for safe passage.
Kristin Jones, a regular trail user, expressed surprise at the sign, suspecting that nearby homeowners might be behind the decision due to the constant foot traffic. Kathy Beach, a long-time resident in the area, described the trail as serene and safe for activities with her family. "We’ve been used to the access, so we thought of it as public property," she noted, voicing frustration over the detour now required to access the trail.
The city of Littleton has acknowledged the closure, stating that the access trail lies on private property and has been closed by the property owner. They plan to engage with the owner to explore potential solutions. Beach acknowledges the property owner’s rights but worries about safety. The closure forces trail users to divert to Mineral Avenue, a busy street that poses risks for children and cyclists alike.
Beach suggested a vested interest from the city or organizations like the High Line Conservancy in purchasing the path for public use, recognizing the community’s deep connection to the area. As residents navigate this unexpected change, community members remain hopeful for a resolution that balances property rights and the public’s access to recreational spaces.
