Daily Snow Report: Snowfall Forecast for Colorado Ski Areas | Whiteout

Colorado Enters December with Strong Snowpack Despite New Dry Spell

As Colorado transitions into meteorological winter, the state’s snowpack remains robust, standing at 128% of the average as of December 1, 2024. This marks a notable 25-30 percentage points above average despite the ongoing dry conditions and rising temperatures.

Since Thanksgiving, Colorado has not received any new snowfall, and the state is expected to see sunny and dry weather for the first week of December. The high temperatures have been gradually increasing, with notable highs of 27°F in Copper Mountain and 37°F in Aspen. As a result, the snowpack has slightly diminished, dropping from 139% to 128% in just four days, but no immediate concern seems warranted because the sun’s angle is still minimal and temperatures rarely exceed freezing.

The National Weather Service forecasts clear skies for the week, with temperatures in the upper 30s at higher elevations and mid-40s in resort areas like Aspen. Despite the dry conditions, the upcoming weather model indicates a chance of snow between December 8-10 as a new system moves into the region, potentially bringing 1-7 inches of snow across the state.

Ski resorts are eagerly awaiting the first significant snowfall of the month to kickstart the winter season. While some areas are still closed, several resorts are poised to open in mid-December, with anticipations for more energetic storms following the initial system.

As the state enjoys its snowy backdrop, the prospect of fresh powder is keeping excitement high among skiers and snowboarders alike.
