A tragic fatal crash on Interstate 70 in Colorado has left a 1-year-old baby orphaned, as well as two newlyweds and the bride’s mother dead. The crash involved a semi-truck carrying large pipes that rolled over, causing a chain reaction that resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries. The deceased individuals have been identified as Ruben Rodriguez, Juliana Rodriguez Plata, and Luz Melba Martinez, who were visiting from Colombia. The couple’s 1-year-old son Daniel survived the crash.
The Wheat Ridge Police Department is investigating the incident, estimating that at least seven vehicles, including the semi-truck, were involved in the crashes. The debris field from the load of the semi-truck spanned across both lanes of the highway, causing a massive scene of destruction.
The crash occurred near the I-70/Ward Road Interchange reconstruction project area, raising concerns about the safety measures in place to prevent such accidents. Drivers in the area have expressed worries about the road conditions and signage, suggesting that more specific warnings should be implemented.
As the community mourns the loss of three individuals in this tragic event, a GoFundMe has been set up to assist with funeral costs and care for the baby left behind. The Colorado Department of Transportation is continuing with the Ward Road Interchange reconstruction project to improve infrastructure and ensure public safety on the I-70 corridor.
