Denver International Airport Sees Surge in Thanksgiving Travelers
DENVER — Denver International Airport (DIA) experienced its busiest day of the Thanksgiving holiday travel period on Sunday, with over 90,500 passengers expected to navigate through security. The airport was bustling as travelers faced long lines for check-in and security checks, with wait times approaching one hour.
Many travelers, however, expressed a sense of relief amidst the chaos. Caleb Perruzza, a Colorado resident, shared, "I would say this is not the worst I’ve seen it," highlighting the convenience of having TSA PreCheck which allowed him to save over 45 minutes in line.
Conversely, travelers unfamiliar with the airport, like Noelle Germany, described the experience as overwhelming. "It’s not my favorite airport, to be honest. It’s pretty crazy," she remarked, emphasizing the sense of disarray that can accompany busy travel days.
Airport officials had previously advised travelers to utilize off-site parking lots to ease congestion, as parking facilities at DIA were fully occupied. This guidance appears to be part of a broader effort to manage the influx of passengers during the peak travel times, ensuring a smoother journey for all.
As people from all regions converge at DIA, the airport’s operations are under significant strain, but travelers are making the best of the situation, prepared for the bustling traffic and longer wait times as they head off to their Thanksgiving destinations. With the holiday weekend approaching, the airport expects continued high traffic, prompting ongoing adjustments to accommodate the surge in holiday travelers.
