Deputies Involved in Fatal Shooting During Mental Health Crisis in Adams County

ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. — A tragic incident unfolded in Adams County on Saturday evening when deputies from the Adams County Sheriff’s Office fatally shot a man reportedly armed with an axe. The situation began around 4:42 p.m. after a concerned citizen dialed 911, expressing fears that the man, who resided in the 7600 block of Heather Place, was possibly suicidal and possessed weapons.

Responding to the emergency, sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene shortly after and encountered the individual. According to the sheriff’s office, deputies issued multiple verbal commands urging the man to “drop the axe” as he approached them holding the weapon. Despite the warnings, the situation escalated, leading to deputies discharging their firearms at around 5:20 p.m.

Following the shooting, medical personnel treated the man and transported him to a nearby hospital; however, he was later pronounced dead. The man’s identity has not yet been disclosed pending notification of his family.

The incident has been referred to the 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, which is responsible for conducting investigations into officer-involved shootings.

Authorities are urging the community to approach the situation with sensitivity as mental health crises continue to challenge law enforcement responses. Further details surrounding the events leading to the shooting remain under investigation.
