Avalanche swaps backup goalies in trade involving Annunen

The Colorado Avalanche have made a significant change in their goaltending lineup, acquiring Scott Wedgewood in exchange for Justus Annunen and a sixth-round pick. The Avalanche currently rank 30th in the NHL in goals-against average and 32nd in save percentage, prompting the need for a change in net.
Wedgewood, 32, may not have impressive statistics this season with a .878 save percentage and 3.69 GAA, but in the 2022-23 season, he posted a .915 save percentage and a 2.72 GAA while playing for the Dallas Stars. His experience and past performance are what the Avalanche are banking on to stabilize their goaltending situation.
On the other hand, Annunen, who started nine games for the Avalanche this season, struggled in his last game against Tampa Bay where he allowed 5 goals on 16 shots. While his goals saved over expected data is slightly better than Alexandar Georgiev’s, both goalies have not performed up to par compared to last season.
The Avalanche hope that Wedgewood’s experience and track record will bring much-needed stability to their goaltending, as they continue to strive for success in the current NHL season.Wedgewood signed a 2-year, $3 million contract with Nashville in the offseason, indicating that he can be a valuable asset for the Avalanche moving forward.
