Denver Superintendent Alex Marrero awarded $17,000 bonus

Denver Superintendent Alex Marrero was approved for a $17,326 bonus by the school board for meeting 85% of his goals last school year. Marrero’s bonus is equal to 5% of his annual salary of $346,529. The board unanimously approved Marrero’s evaluation and performance pay, citing his accomplishments in serving migrant students, creating community hubs, and focusing on environmental sustainability.

This marks Marrero’s third evaluation since he became DPS superintendent in 2021. Last year, he received an $8,325 bonus for meeting just over 80% of his goals. The board’s evaluation highlighted Marrero’s achievements in equity, health and safety, climate action, and graduation and post-graduation success. However, he did not fully meet goals related to student and staff well-being and teaching and learning, particularly in standardized test scores.

Marrero’s contract allows him to earn up to a 12.5% bonus if he meets all his goals, with no bonus awarded if he meets less than 75%. Board President Carrie Olson commended Marrero for his contributions to Denver Public Schools and expressed excitement for the future. Marrero’s performance will continue to be monitored closely as he works towards further enhancing educational outcomes in the district.
