Coloradans are embracing the thrifting trend this Halloween season, with many heading to Goodwill Colorado and ARC Thrift to find affordable second-hand costumes and decorations. According to Maggie Scivicque, Vice-President of Marketing for ARC Thrift, Colorado is ranked 8th among thrifting states, with thrift store shopping becoming increasingly popular during the COVID pandemic. The rise in thrifting has even inspired a group of intellectually and developmentally disabled adults to create their own scary clown movie, with costumes sourced from thrift stores.

Goodwill Colorado has also expanded its Halloween marketing efforts, creating a “Look Book” featuring unique costume ideas using actual used merchandise from their stores. With Americans expected to spend over $11 billion on Halloween in 2024, thrift stores like ARC Thrift are capitalizing on the holiday season by saving Halloween merchandise year-round and mixing new accessories with used thrift items.

For those looking to stand out this Halloween, avoiding popular costumes such as Spiderman and Barbie is recommended. The most common costumes for both kids and adults this year include witches, vampires, cats, and pirates. Additionally, dressing up pets has become increasingly popular, with pumpkins, hot dogs, bats, and bumblebees being the most common pet costumes.

Overall, the thrifting trend is continuing to grow in Colorado, with residents finding unique and affordable Halloween costumes and decorations at their local thrift stores. Halloween enthusiasts are encouraged to embrace their creative side and think outside the box when it comes to dressing up this season.
