Power grid failure leaves Cuba in darkness

Cuba’s national electrical grid suffered a total blackout after the Antonio Guiteras power plant failed, leaving approximately 10 million people without power. The government had already shut down schools, non-essential industry, and canceled some government services in an attempt to conserve energy. President Miguel Diaz-Canel vowed to restore power as soon as possible.

The crisis in Cuba, worsened by shortages of food, fuel, water, and medicine, has made life increasingly difficult for residents. The ongoing rolling blackouts were blamed on deteriorating infrastructure, fuel shortages, and rising demand. The inability to deliver fuel due to rough seas following Hurricane Milton has further exacerbated the situation.

The government, also attributing the crisis to the US embargo and sanctions, highlighted the need for maintenance on the island’s power plants to address the underproduction. Private businesses will face higher energy rates to compensate for shortfalls.

Cuba’s largest oil supplier, Venezuela, has reduced shipments to the island, leaving Cuba to rely on the costly spot market for fuel. With Russia and Mexico also reducing shipments, the government is facing challenges in securing the necessary fuel supply.

Despite the current difficulties, electricity officials remain optimistic that power generation will improve as weather conditions allow for the distribution of previously delivered fuel. Residents continue to endure the blackout, with some using privately-owned generators to maintain power.
