Kathy Bates opens up about her role on “Matlock”, ageism, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle: “Each day is a gift.”

Emmy and Academy Award-winning actor Kathy Bates is making a comeback in the CBS legal drama series “Matlock” after considering semi-retirement. At 76, Bates didn’t expect an opportunity like this to come her way. In an interview with “CBS Mornings,” she opened up about feeling invisible as a woman her age, but taking on this role has changed her perspective overnight.

Playing lawyer Madeline “Matty” Matlock, Bates tackles ageism in the workforce as her character re-enters the legal field. The series is based on the original hit TV show of the same name. Bates initially hesitated to take on the role, expecting it to be just another episodic show, but a twist in her character’s story involving seeking justice for her daughter who died of opioids drew her in.

Bates also shared her journey to health, having lost 100 pounds over the years, which has transformed her physically and mentally. Feeling like a different woman now, Bates is grateful for the newfound opportunities and gifts in her life.

Passionate about her work and seeing herself as a “working actor,” Bates focuses on the craft rather than accolades. She appreciates the daily miracle of being able to work and be healthy, emphasizing that it’s the work that truly matters in her career. With this new role in “Matlock,” Bates is excited to showcase her talent and dedication to the craft once again.
