Duke Energy is preparing for over 1 million outages in Florida once Hurricane Milton hits the state. They will stage 16,000 workers at sites along the storm’s path to begin restoring power once conditions allow. Milton is expected to be a destructive hurricane, reaching Category 5 status with wind speeds up to 165 mph. Despite weakening before landfall, it has the potential to be one of the most destructive hurricanes on record for west-central Florida. The Southeast is still recovering from Hurricane Helene, with over 1 million people in Georgia and North Carolina without power. Duke Energy has restored 2.6 million outages, including 1.4 million in North Carolina, since September 27, but many customers are still unable to receive electricity due to extensive damage to their homes. The company has shifted to a targeted approach for their operations and efforts in western North Carolina. Duke Energy is working to address the challenges posed by both Helene and the incoming Milton, anticipating significant damage and outages in the region.
