Violent confrontation between police and Palestinian supporters breaks out in Amsterdam during 7 October commemorations

Several cities across Europe held events on Monday to commemorate the over 1200 Israelis who were killed last year on 7 October, as well as those taken hostage by Hamas. In Amsterdam, police clashed with protesters marching in support of Palestinians amid Israel’s military campaign on Gaza. The protesters were met with violence as they tried to approach Dam Square where a pro-Israeli gathering was taking place.

In Berlin, a memorial was held at the Chabad synagogue where survivors of the attacks mourned loved ones and called for continued efforts to release remaining hostages. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni attended a ceremony at Rome’s main synagogue, emphasizing Israel’s right to defend itself while also lamenting the devastation in Gaza. In France, activists from the “Tous 7 Octobre” association hung posters of the Hamas hostages’ faces in Paris to humanize them in the public eye.

Overall, 94 out of a total of 251 hostages are still being held captive in Gaza. The events across Europe served as a reminder of the tragic events of 7 October and the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. The commemorations also highlighted the importance of addressing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the need for continued efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.
