Kim’s Kafe, a soul food restaurant in North Carolina, is facing backlash for enforcing a strict dress code that prohibits shorts, crop tops, leggings, T-straps, white T-shirts, short skirts, skimpy clothes, and cleavage showing. The restaurant defended the dress code by stating that people are not leaving much to the imagination nowadays. The rules, which have been in place throughout the summer, are prominently displayed on the front door of the establishment and on its website.
The restaurant declined to comment on the controversy when reached by the media, stating that they were not interested in speaking to reporters. The Facebook post outlining the dress code rules received over 10,000 comments, with many expressing outrage and comparing the rules to a dystopian world similar to “The Handmaid’s Tale.” Some commenters also pointed out that the dress code was incompatible with the hot and humid summer conditions in the area.
Despite the backlash, attorney David Daggett explained that the dress code is legal as long as it is applied to every customer equally, without discrimination. He provided an example of a hypothetical scenario where a business owner could refuse entry to people wearing blue shirts, as long as they apply the rule universally and not based on discriminatory reasons. Overall, Kim’s Kafe’s dress code has sparked controversy and divided opinions among customers and social media users.
