The Disappearance of Local Theater Companies: What’s Behind the Trend? | Arts & Entertainment

Colorado’s theater scene is experiencing a decline with a significant number of companies shutting down since the start of the pandemic. A total of 53 active theater companies have gone temporarily dormant, representing a 45% decrease in the number of operating companies. The closures are mainly affecting small, self-funded troupes that lack access to public funding sources. Companies are facing challenges such as rising costs in the Denver metro area, a housing shortage, and decreased attendance numbers post-pandemic.

One bright spot in this otherwise dreary landscape is the success of the new queer-focused Two Cent Lion Theatre Company, which has managed to produce seven fully-staged productions in just two years. Founded by Kevin Douglas, Gracie Jacobson, and Izzy Chern, the company has relied on a partnership with the city of Aurora to provide affordable performance space. This partnership has allowed them to exceed their attendance goals for each production.

The closure of many small theater companies highlights the importance of public-private partnerships in supporting local artists and providing affordable performance spaces. The city of Aurora’s model of revenue-neutral pricing for performance space is seen as a potential solution to revitalizing Colorado’s theater scene. Building a pipeline of opportunity for artists and providing a place to test new ideas is crucial for the future of theater in Colorado.
