Colorado GOP Chairman Fired After Making Derogatory Comments About LGBTQ+ Community

The Colorado GOP’s central committee voted overwhelmingly to remove state party chairman Dave Williams, known for his homophobic messaging, in a meeting on August 24. Former El Paso County GOP chair Eli Bremer was elected to serve the remainder of Williams’ term. Williams was criticized for funneling party resources into his failed Congressional bid and attacking fellow Republicans. The move came after a controversial email sent in June by Williams referred to LGBTQ+ individuals as “godless groomers” and called for burning pride flags. Following backlash and calls for his removal, Williams refused to apologize, stating that the email was against an agenda harmful to children. Williams, who also falsely insisted Trump won the 2020 election, was ousted as chairman, but he has dismissed the meeting as illegal and vowed to stay in power. This is not the first time Williams has faced criticism for his anti-LGBTQ+ views, having previously supported a measure to ban same-sex marriage and created an issue committee to ban gender-affirming care for minors in 2023. The National Republican Congressional Committee has accepted the removal of Williams, but he continues to contest the decision. The Colorado GOP’s actions have sparked further division within the party and raised concerns about the direction of the state’s Republican leadership.
