The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is calling for an inquiry into alleged civil rights violations committed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s Election Integrity Unit. LULAC accuses Paxton of targeting Latino voting activists in an effort to suppress voting rights. LULAC leaders have requested the Department of Justice to open a civil rights investigation into the incidents. Six volunteers working with the organization to register voters reported that their homes were raided, searched, and their electronics and voter registration materials were seized. LULAC believes that Paxton’s actions are aimed at keeping Latinos from voting and creating a chilling effect on civic participation. In response, Paxton’s office stated that the search warrants were executed as part of an ongoing election integrity investigation related to allegations of election fraud and vote harvesting during the 2022 elections. Paxton emphasized his commitment to protecting the security of the ballot box and ensuring accountability for anyone committing election crimes. LULAC has cited the case of an 87-year-old great-grandmother who was interrogated for three hours outside her home as an example of intimidation and voter disenfranchisement tactics. The group is adamant in not allowing its members to be targeted, harassed, bullied, or intimidated in their efforts to increase Latino political participation.
