Former President Donald Trump announced his support for Blake Masters, a venture capitalist, in the race for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District, despite previously endorsing Abe Hamadeh, a Republican House candidate. Trump praised both candidates but ultimately gave his “Complete and Total Endorsement” to Masters just days before the July 30 primary election. The district covers parts of Maricopa and Yavapai counties and is heavily Republican, making the primary winner a favorite in the general election.
Masters and Hamadeh are facing off against each other, along with several other candidates, in the Republican primary. Public polling has shown a close race with both candidates having strong support. Trump’s endorsement of Masters was seen as a surprise, given his previous backing of Hamadeh. Hamadeh’s spokesperson expressed confidence in his ability to win, highlighting his early support from Trump and grassroots patriots.
Both candidates previously received Trump’s endorsement during the 2022 election cycle for different positions. The race has divided Trump’s inner circle, with some allies supporting Hamadeh and others backing Masters. Masters has focused on illegal immigration as a key issue, attacking Hamadeh’s background and military service. On the other hand, Hamadeh has criticized Masters for running a negative campaign and questioning his commitment to election integrity.
It remains to be seen how Trump’s endorsement will impact the outcome of the primary race, as early voting has already begun. The candidates continue to campaign and make their case to voters in a highly contested election.
