Colorado Governor Jared Polis, recently appointed as the chair of the National Governors Association, has outlined a plan to improve education and workforce connections across states. Titled “Let’s Get Ready: Educating All Americans for Success,” Polis’ initiative aims to create a roadmap for governors to enhance the workforce and help more residents secure jobs. The plan will involve collaboration with educators, parents, students, researchers, and community and business leaders to develop strategies for achieving these goals.
With Colorado currently experiencing a job surplus, the Polis administration has been working to align education with the needs of the economy. Laws have been enacted to revamp the state’s workforce education system, with a focus on connecting residents to high-demand, well-paying careers. Additionally, Polis has promoted the “Big Blur” concept, which aims to streamline the transition from high school to college to ensure that students graduate with the necessary skills for specific roles.
To create the roadmap, lawmakers will analyze data to determine the skills students need at each stage of their education, measure outcomes to assess effectiveness, reallocate resources and change policies to better prepare residents for jobs, and establish accountability measures.
Past chairs of the National Governors Association have tackled various issues, including transportation, civility, mental health, and education. Polis’ plan is set to be published at the end of his term, providing a foundation for bipartisan policy solutions and raising awareness of critical issues in education and workforce development.
