A tragic accident occurred on July 13 when 20-year-old hiker Grace Rohloff fell to her death while descending Yosemite’s Half Dome with her father, Jonathan Rohloff. The pair were descending the famous cables at the summit when Grace slipped on a slick section of rock and fell. The National Park Service did not immediately comment on the incident.
Jonathan Rohloff recounted their final moments at the summit, where they enjoyed the view before a storm rolled in and they began their descent. He tried to reach out to his daughter as she fell, but she slid down the mountain quickly. Rescuers took three hours to arrive due to harsh weather, and Grace ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
A fundraiser was set up in Grace’s memory to support the grandson of her former math teacher, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, as well as her high school’s girls athletics program. Described as full of excitement and adventure, Grace’s family and community are mourning her loss.
Jonathan Rohloff, a school principal, expressed his belief that Grace’s death was a call from God, and he is still trying to come to terms with the tragedy. The family is looking for reasons for her death that may be revealed in time. The entire community is devastated by the loss of a young woman who was described as a treasure and is dearly missed.
