Hurricane Beryl, originally a Category 4 to 5 storm, has weakened to a Category 3 storm as it moves towards Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The hurricane caused at least 10 deaths and significant destruction in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Venezuela, Grenada, and Jamaica. The death toll is expected to rise as communication is restored across affected islands.
Cameron County, Texas issued a voluntary evacuation notice due to Hurricane Beryl’s forecasted path approaching the area. The storm, which became the earliest recorded Category 5 hurricane, surpassed the previous record set by Hurricane Emily in 2005.
The forecast track of the hurricane shows its potential path, but it may travel outside the projected path up to 33% of the time. Various forecast tools and models, known as spaghetti models, are used to predict the storm’s movement. The National Hurricane Center uses only the top-performing models to help make accurate forecasts.
Overall, Hurricane Beryl has caused significant damage in the Caribbean and poses a threat as it moves towards Mexico and potentially Texas. Residents in the affected areas are advised to take precautionary measures to prevent damage and injuries from high winds.
